It is named after its designer, the sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, who designed the obverse and reverse. The coin was produced as an order from President Theodore Roosevelt as he sought to beautify American coinage.  It was minted primarily for use in international trade.

The 1 troy ounce Gold Saint Gaudens Double Eagle has a diameter of 34.1 millimeters and a gross weight of 33.431 grams. The edge of the coin is lettered “E PLURIBUS UNUM” which translates to ‘Out of many, One’. It has a composition of 90.0% fine gold, the rest being copper.  The obverse side of the coin features Lady Liberty, who represents victory. On the coin, Liberty holds a torch in one hand, representing enlightenment and an olive branch which represents peace. The figure is surrounded by 46 stars, one of each of the states in 1907. The stars later changed to 48 in 1912 in reflection of New Mexico and Arizona becoming states. The name “LIBERTY” is engraved at the top side of the coin. The year of coinage is debossed at the bottom-right side of the coin, “1933”. The mint mark appears above the date; between the second and third numbers.

The reverse is a side view of a flying eagle, seen slightly from below, with a sun rising and its rays behind it., complementing the obverse. On the upper side of the coin, the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is engraved from the top-left side of the coin to the top-right side of the coin. the face value of the coin is also inscribed at the top of the coin, “TWENTY DOLLARS”. The coins issued from 1907-1908 do not include the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” while the coins released from 1908 to 1933 display the addition of the motto.

Philadelphia Mint in Philadelphia, Denver Mint in Denver and the San Francisco Mint in San Francisco produced the coin. Coins issued from the Philadelphia Mint do not have a mint mark. Traders of the coin can buy Gold Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Coin Online free from sales tax.
