The bullion coin, marked by pure platinum, was partly reintroduced in 2009 in the form of one troy ounce denomination. The coin is in five denominations, namely; one-twentieth ounce, one-tenth ounce, a quarter ounce, half an ounce and one ounce.

From the series, the one-ounce denomination is the most common. The coin, which is the official platinum bullion coin of Canada and has non-circulating legal tender status, has a face value of fifty Canadian dollars. The coin weighs 31.110g with a diameter of 30 millimeters.  With a serrated edge, it has a thickness of 2.62 millimeters. It has a platinum purity of .9995.

The obverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf coin has the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, centrally positioned, facing the right side of the coin. On the left shoulder of the queen, two initials, “SB”, are inscribed. The initials stand for Susanna Blunt, who designed the coin. On the inner circle, horizontal inclined lines emanate from the edges of the queen’s image. The text “ELIZABETH II”, runs at the top of the coin from mid-left section of the coin clockwise towards the mid-right section. The inscription, “50 DOLLARS 2019”, for 2019 edition, is from the mid-left of the coin towards the mid-right, in an anticlockwise direction. The reverse of the coin features the Canadian national symbol, the distinctive Maple Leaf design, centrally positioned occupying almost two-thirds of the inner circle.  The text, “CANADA”, is inscribed on the top of the coin, in a clockwise direction. The inscription, “FINE PLATINUM 1 OZ PLATINE PUR” runs from the mid-left section of the coin towards the mid-right section of the coin, anticlockwise. The numerals, “9995”, are written on both the middle right and middle left side of the coin. A small Maple Leaf is located on the bottom, right side of the leaf stalk.

Minting of the coin was done by the Royal Canadian Mint, established in 1908 as the Ottawa branch mint of the British Royal Mint. Collectors and investors can buy Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf coins online exempt from sales tax/VAT. A Gold Maple Leaf coin, Silver Maple Leaf and Palladium Maple Leaf coin are also available from The Royal Canadian Mint.
