It was added alongside the gold and silver version of the Kangaroo, also known as the Australian Nugget. The coin was the first Australian coin with the annually changing reverse design.

The coin has a diameter of 32.6 millimeters and a thickness of 2.7 millimeters and has 1 troy ounce of platinum content.  With its reeded edge, the coin has a composition of 99.95% fine platinum. It has a face value of 100 Australian dollars (100 AUD). On the reverse side of the coin, the image of a red kangaroo which is centrally positioned is portrayed. It is the largest member of the species in which it belongs.  The red kangaroo is captured hopping from the right side of the coin to the left side of the coin. On the design field, stylised bursts of sunshine rays coming from the background field are depicted.  The text “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO” is inscribed at the top of the coin. The year of manufacture, the size of the coin and the platinum purity are inscribed at the bottom of the coin – “2018 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM”. The mint mark, “P”, is debossed on the mid-right section of the coin.

The obverse side of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty, a youthful Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Queen faces the right side of the coin wearing the crown she wore during her coronation in 1953. The initials of the designer, “IRB”, are engraved beneath Her Majesty’s portrait. The name “ELIZABETH II” is inscribed on the left side of the coin; from the bottom-left side to top-left side. “AUSTRALIA” is debossed on the right side of the coin. The face value of the coin is inscribed at the bottom- “• 100 DOLLARS •”.

Perth Mint, Australia’s official bullion mint which is wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia, produced the Australian Platinum Kangaroo coin. The mint was established on the 20th June 1899 and still produces legal tender currency for Australia. Collectors and investors of the Platinum Kangaroo coin are exempt from sales tax or VAT.
