Designs inspired by the Canadian wildlife have featured prominently in recent years on gold, silver and platinum bullion, especially coins. From some of the largest mammals on the ground to aerial predators, the Royal Canadian Mint, RCM, has captured it all on both obverses and reverse sides of its popular bullion coins. One of the many collections available is the Canadian Platinum Fighting Bison which was recently introduced in 2015. The goal was to offer collectors and investors a unique option among an array of Canadian coins that was already diverse both in design and weight.
Between 2011 and 2013, RCM ran a massively popular program, The Canadian Wildlife Series that featured animal species on the reverse side of the coins found on the North American continent many of which were resident to Canada. The Canadian Platinum Fighting Bison coin received rave reviews. While the country was not alone in issuing a bevy of bison coins during the period, other countries featuring bison on their coins included Belarus, Poland, Tuvalu, and Niue. In addition, recent mints offer collectors of all budgets the opportunity to build a bison collection of their own.
The bison is one of the seven sacred creatures worshipped by Native American people that is said to bring happiness and longevity. In one of the designs, the bison carries a human figure on its back in security and comfort. A white bison, which is revered as a sacred symbol is spared from a hunt. According to myth, a white bison is so rare that its birth is deemed a miracle, a harbinger of spiritual healing from Mother Earth. The chances of one being born are estimated at 1 in 6 million. Maybe the Canadian Platinum Fighting Bison coin is the perfect starting point for a collector to start a new collection of bison coins.
