The debut mint of the Australian Gold Mini Roo coin was in 2012 with its release on 27th March 2012. This is one of the coins that celebrates and showcases Australian wildlife. It is dedicated to the kangaroo, which is one of the most renowned animals found in the Australian wilderness. The coin was minted by the Perth Mint, which was established in 1899 and is the official mint for Australian coinage.

After 2012, various mints of the Australian Gold Mini Roo coin have been minted. This include the 2014, 2017 and 2018 versions with all of them having the same face value of 2 Australian dollars. They all weigh 0.5 grams in gross weight and have a gold purity of 99.99 percent rendering their gold bullion weight .01607 t/oz. The maximum diameter of all the versions of the coin is 11.60 millimeters while the maximum thickness is 0.70 millimeters.

The obverse of all the versions of the Australian Gold Mini Roo coins have the same features comprising the Ian Rank-Broadley, crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions, “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA [YEAR]”and “· 2 DOLLARS ·” running clockwise above and anticlockwise below the effigy respectively. However, the images of their reverses feature different images of the kangaroo as made by different designers. For example, Wade Robinson designed the obverse of the 2012 Australian Gold Mini Roo with the kangaroo standing on its twos facing right. Tom Vaughan designed the 2014 version where the kangaroo standing on its two hind legs with its body facing to the left and its head turned to the right features. Jennifer McKenna designed the hopping kangaroo on the 2017 version while Neil Hollis designed the 2018 version featuring two kangaroos hopping facing to the right.

The Australian Gold Mini Roo is exclusively minted by Perth Mint. Situated in East Perth in Western Australia region, the Mint was established on June 20 1899.
