The 1/20 t/oz coin has a diameter of 14.8 millimeters and a thickness of 1.4 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a composition of 99.99% fine gold. The obverse of the coin, features the portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II which was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Queen faces the right profile of the coin wearing the crown she wore during her coronation in 1953. Beneath the Queen’s effigy are the initials of the of the designer, “IRB”. The name “ELIZABETH II” is engraved on the left side of the coin; from the mid-left to the top-left side. The name “AUSTRALIA” is inscribed from the top-right side of the coin to the mid-right section.  The size of the coin, gold fineness, the year of mintage and the monetary denomination of the coin- “1/20 9999 GOLD 2018 5 DOLLARS”- are inscribed from the mid-left side of the coin to the mid-right section, in a counterclockwise direction.

The reverse side of the coin features the portrait of a dog; the Labrador Retriever, positioned towards the left side, tilting its head facing the right side. It is a different design from the German Shepherd featured on the silver coins. The lab is depicted on a collection of rocks with a small, stylized pine tree growing from the rocks in the background. The Chinese character for dog, “狗”, is engraved at the top-right side of the coin, above the dogs back. The mint mark, “P”, is debossed on the mid-left of the coin. The “YEAR OF THE DOG” is engraved at the bottom of the coin.
