The Austrian Gold Corona is among the first gold bullion coins available to Americans after private ownership of gold had been legalized again in 1914. It was issued between 1908 and 1914 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Franz Joseph I’s rule. It is one of the bullion coins with the longest history. Presently, Austrian Gold Coronas are re-strikes, as their official reminting is no longer done.

The Austrian Gold Corona comes in denominations of 10, 20, and 100 Coronas. The 10, 20, and 100 Corona has a width of 19mm, 21mm, and 37mm respectively. They also have a gross mass of 3.38g, 6.77g, and 33.87g in the same order. Alongside the already mentioned dimensions, the coins have a thickness of 1.4mm, 1.2mm, and 2.3mm respectively. Austrian Gold Corona is a commemorative coin that has a very rich history thus a very high intrinsic value. Investors find it worth trading in due to its high demand worldwide.

The obverse of Austrian Gold Corona depicts a profile of Franc Joseph I facing to the right. The inscription “FRANC en. IOS. IDG. IMP. AVSTR. REX. BOH. GAL. ILL. ETC. ET AP. RAX. HVNG.” circles the profile. This is translated as, “FRANZ JOSEPH I- BY GRACE OF GOD EMPEROR OF AUSTRIA-KING OF BOHEMIA, GALICIA, ILLYRIUM, ETC AND KING OF HUNGARY”. Below this image, the year of mintage and the face value are indicated. The reverse side features Austrian Coat of Arms; a double-edged crowned eagle. Around the Coat of Arms, the coin denomination and mint year is written in words, for example the 100 Corona has the inscription “100 COR” for 100 Corona and “C CORONA MDCCCCXV” for C CORONA 1915.

The Austrian Mint was formerly known as Vienna Mint. Duke Leopold V of Austria established it in 1194 during which the first coins to be struck were silver coins. The mint has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. It carries out both the design and stamping of the coins it produces. It is responsible for minting Austrian coins, bullion coins and commemorative coins. Trading in this coin does not attract sales tax or VAT.
