The British Gold Year Of The Rooster coin was first minted and issued in 2017. It is the fourth coin in a continuation of the British version of the 12-series Shēngxiào Collection; the first of which was the Year of the Horse launched in 2014. The Shēngxiào Collection exemplifies Britain’s embracement of the centuries’-old Chinese tradition of zodiacs based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

The design of the coin combines the work of Jody Clark on the obverse and the work of Wuon-Gean Ho. Jody is employed by the Royal Mint and is best known for adapting the Queen’s image to her older age based on the initial work of Ian Rank-Broadley. Wuon-Gean Ho was born in the UK, but is of Chinese descent. The obverse contains the effigy of the Queen facing to the right with the inscription, “JC” below the neckline and the text, “ELIZABETH·II·D·G REG·FID·DEF·100·POUNDS·” around it. The reverse contains the image of a Marsh Daisy rooster, which is found from Northern England’s Lancashire area. There are 10 sea-thrift flowers (synonymously called the Marsh Daisies as well) five on each side of the rooster’s feet, which symbolize perfection in Chinese tradition. The inscription, “YEAR OF THE ROOSTER·2017” forms the first row of text around the rooster’s image while the second line of smaller font text, “1 OZ FINE GOLD 999.9” is below the first.
