The Canadian Amazon gold coin weighs 31.16 grams and comprises 1.00171633417461 t/oz of gold with a purity of 99.99 percent. The coin has a diameter of 30 millimeters and comes in the denomination of 200 dollars only with a limited mintage of 275. It was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, which has its headquarters in Ottawa Canada and a branch in Winnipeg. The Royal Canadian Mint was founded on 2nd January 1908 as the crown corporation owned entirely by the Government of Canada. It has international reputation in coinage minting even for other countries.
The obverse of the Canadian Amazon gold coin features the age-refined effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which was created by Susanna Blake in 2003. The effigy faces to the right and is without a crown. To the left of the effigy, the inscription, “ELIZABETH II” runs clockwise as does the text, “D · G · REGINA” to the right of the effigy. The value inscription, “200 DOLLARS” appears below the Queen’s effigy.
The reverse of the coin features the design by Neil Hamelin, a Canadian artist. Neil included the starboard angle of the brigantine build in Nova Scotia called the Amazon. The Amazon weighed 184 tons and appears heeled over with the wind filling its canvas sails consequently driving her forward through the Atlantic’s choppy waters. The detail in reproducing the Amazon on the Canadian Gold Amazon coin is evident in her headsails, her hull’s wooden planks and the anchor tat connects to the bow. The inscriptions, “CANADA” and “AMAZON” appear at the top and bottom of the coin. The text, “2016” appears in a the diagonal opposite of the inscription, “NH”.
