The name Krugerrand was derived from combining the last name of the South African Republic’s first Boer president, Paul Kruger, and the word rand, the unit of currency in South Africa.

The South African Mint, with its headquarters in Centurion – South Africa, manufactured the coin. It was founded in 1941 and is responsible for the production of all coins of the South African rand on behalf of its owner the South African Reserve Bank. The obverse of the coin depicts the left-profile effigy of Paul Kruger. He led the Boer cause for a free and independent South African republic, even serving as the third president from 1883 to 1900. The text “SUID-AFRIKA” is debossed on the left side of the coin; from the bottom-left to the top-left side of the coin. On the right side of the coin, the name “SOUTH AFRICA” is engraved from the top-right side to the bottom-right side.

The reverse side of the Silver Krugerrand depicts South Africa’s symbol, the image of a springbok antelope in motion bounding across the dry terrain. At the top side, the name “KRUGERRAND” is inscribed curving from the top-left towards the top-right of the coin. The text “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1” arcs from the bottom-left side to the bottom-right side of the coin. The year of mint is engraved at the mid-section – “2017”.
