It came as a replacement for the real. It was then subdivided into 100 céntimos de escudo. The silver coins had different denominations; 10, 20 and 40 céntimos de escudo, 1 and 2 escudos. All the coins were minted until 1868, with the 10 silver escudo also minted in 1873 during the First Spanish Republic. The escudo was replaced by the peseta at a rate of 2 ½ pesetas = 1 escudo.

The 1 silver escudo is the most used of the escudo coins. It has a diameter of 24.4 millimeters. The gross weight of the coin is 12.96 grams having a silver purity of .900. The obverse of the coin had a portrait of Queen Isabella II, Queen regnant of Spain from 13th August, 1836. The effigy extends from the head to the bust area of Queen. The Queen faces the right. The text “ISABEL 2Ḁ POR LA G•” is inscribed from the bottom-left of the coin to the top-left of the coin in a clockwise direction. “DE DIOS Y LA CONST•” is engraved from the top-right towards the bottom-right of the coin. The year of coinage is engraved at the bottom of the coin; for example, “.1867.” for the coin produced in the year 1867.

Crowned (Royal Crown) Spanisharms between the two Pillars of Hercules are depicted at the reverse. The pillars are surrounded by a ribbon with the motto “PLUS ULTRA” written: “PLUS” on the part of the ribbon on the left pillar while “ULTA” on the part on the right pillar. The text “REINA DE” is inscribed from the bottom-left to the top right and “LAS ESPANAS” from the top-right to the bottom-right. “UN ESCUDO” is engraved at the bottom of the coin. Two madrids (six-pointed stars) are at the right and left of “UN ESCUDO”.

The Royal Mint (Spain) produced the escudo. Since it was a legal tender currency, investors can buy Spain Silver Escudo coins online with no sales tax or VAT imposed. There is also a Gold Spanish Escudo coin available from the same mint.
