The ISO code of the currency used by banks and financial institutions is CHF, although Fr. is commonly used by businesses and advertisers; some use SFr. for Swiss Franc and to a lesser extent Fr.sv. The Latinate “CH’ stands for Confoederatio Helvetica. Latin is also used for language-neutral inscriptions on the Swiss francs. In 1850, the ½ ,1, 2 and 5 silver francs were introduced.

The Swiss silver franc was manufactured between 1875-1967 has the following specifications. It has a diameter of 23.3 millimeters and a thickness of 1.52 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a silver fineness of 83.5%. The portrait of Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland is on the obverse. She is wearing a toga while holding a spear on her right hand, leaning on a Swiss shield. Her head faces the left side of the coin. she is encircled by 22 stars representing the 22 cantons in which the Confederation then consisted.  The initials of the engraver “A. BOVY INCT” are at the bottom of the coin; “A. BOVY” on the left, “INCT” on the right. The obverse of the coin was designed by Albert Walch.

The reverse of the Switzerland Silver Franc coin features the face value of the coin. The face value of the coin is found at the center of the coin. For example, “1 Fr”. The year of minting of the coin was inscribed below the face value, for example, “1899” for the coin minted in the year 1899. The face value and the year of production of the coin are surrounded by two wreaths. One wreath is from the left side while the other is from the right side. At the point of crossing of the wreaths, the wreaths are tied together using a ribbon. At the bottom-center of the coin, the mint mark, “B”, is engraved.
