It was first introduced in 1835, when the decimal system was devised by Prince Jayanta Mongkol, by King Chulalongkorn. The one-baht denomination was the first to be released. The Thai Silver Baht comes in different denominations- 1⁄128, 1⁄64, 1⁄32, 1⁄16, 1⁄8, ½, 1, 1 ½, 2, 2 ½, 4, 4 ½, 8, 10, 20, 40 and 80 baht. Modern silver baht coins were introduced in 1860.

For the 1 Thai Silver Baht, the coin has a diameter of 31 millimeters and a thickness of 3 millimeters.  The coin weighs 16 grams and has a silver fineness of .900. The portrait of King Rama V, former king of Siam, is on the obverse side of the coin. He faces the left side of the coin. The text “จุฬาลงกรณ์”, King’s name, is engraved on the left side of the coin; which translates to Chulalongkorn in English. “สยามินทร์” is engraved on the right side of the coin. On the right shoulder of the King, the name of the designer, “A. PATEY”, is engraved.

The reverse of the Thailand Silver Baht coin depicts the image of three headed elephant, Erawan. The elephant is of Buddhist/Hindu origin where the three heads represent three major Gods in Hindu mythology- Brahama, Vishnu and Mahesh. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the Keeper and Mahesh is the destroyer. The elephant is celebrated in Thailand because of its incredible strength, durability and longevity. Thus, it’s a symbol of royalty in Thailand. “๔๑สยามรัฐ ร.ศ.๑๒๗ ” is engraved on the left side of the coin; from bottom-left to top-left side of the coin. The inscription translates to: 41 Siam Rath, in English. On the right side of the coin, “ร.ศ.๑๒๗ หนึ่ง บาท” is inscribed from the top-right to the bottom-right. It translates to: Rs 128 one baht.

The Royal Thai Mint, situated in Platinum Thani, Thailand produced the coin.  It is a sub-division of the Treasury Department, Ministry of Finance. The silver baht is a legal tender currency so investors can buy Thailand Silver Baht coins online with no tax imposed. A Thailand Gold Baht coin is also available from the same mint.
