The Indian Head gold pieces, also referred to as the Pratt-Bigelow Gold coins were two separate coin series, identical in design, struck by the United States Mint: a two-and-a-half-dollar piece, or quarter eagle, and a five-dollar coin, or half eagle. The quarter eagle was struck from 1908 to 1915 and from 1925 to 1929. The half eagle was struck from 1908 to 1916, and in 1926. The United States Mint is a unit of the Department of Treasury responsible for producing coins for the United States. Established in 1792, the mint has four active coin-producing mints: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point.

For the Indian Head Half Eagle, the coin has a diameter of 21.6 millimeters. The edge of the coin is reeded and has a composition of .900 fine gold the rest .100 being copper. It has a gross weight of 21.6 millimeters.

Designed by Bela Pratt, a Boston sculptor, the obverse of the coin features the head of a Native American man wearing a headdress and facing the left profile of the coin. The name “LIBERTY” is engraved at the top of the coin. The year of mintage is engraved at the bottom of the coin, “1908”. On the left side of the coin, there are six stars while on the right side of the coin there are seven stars. The initials of the designer, “BLP”, are engraved at the bottom of the coin.

The reverse of the American Gold Indian Head coin portrays a standing eagle on a bunch of arrows facing the left, its left talon holding an olive branch in place. The mint mark is found to the left of the arrow heads. “UNITED•STATES•OF•AMERICA” is inscribed at the top side of the coin.  The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is inscribed at the left side. The text “IN GOD WE TRUST” is engraved on the right side of the coin. “FIVEDOLLARS”, the monetary denomination of the coin, is engraved at the bottom of the coin.
