The shield is upheld by two leopards on both sides, as they stand on crossed lances that point outward with a ribbon covering them with two crossing palm frond leaves which serve as the frame.
The reverse of the Gold African Elephant has an engraved image of an elephant standing in grass that is knee-high on the Serengeti savanna. The sun appears setting above the image and the text, “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” appear at the top. The texts, “1 oz Au 999.9 and, “ELEPHANT” are at the bottom-half section. The year of mintage is divided into two bits, each flanking either leopard on the outside. The face value of the Somalia Gold African Elephant coin appears arced at the bottom side of the reverse.
