It stands out among other bullion coins around the world whose design changes annually.  The coins have various sizes; half-gram, one-fiftieth ounce, one-twenty-fifth ounce, one-tenth ounce’ one quarter ounce, one ounce, five ounces and one kilogram.

The most common of the different coins is the one-ounce size. It weighs in at 31.1 grams with a gold content of 1 t/oz at .9999 purity. The coin has a diameter of 1.5354 inches(39mm) and a thickness of 1.99mm. It weighs 31.103g(1 t/oz). The obverse of the coin, from 2017, has the Somalian national coat of arms with the emblem comprising one star inscribed against a backdrop that contains horizontal lines upon the heraldic shield of Somalia. The shield is upheld by two leopards on both sides, as they stand on crossed lances that point outward with a ribbon covering them with two crossing palm frond leaves which serve as the frame.

The reverse of the Gold African Elephant has an engraved image of an elephant standing in grass that is knee-high on the Serengeti savanna. On the rear side of the elephant is the traditional Somali hut with a border of little coconut palm trees’ cluster. The sun appears setting above the image and the text, “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” appear at the top. The texts, “1 oz Au 999.9 and, “ELEPHANT” are at the bottom-half section. The year of mintage is divided into two bits, each flanking either leopard on the outside. The face value of the Somalia Gold African Elephant coin appears arced at the bottom side of the reverse. To the top, the text, “SOMALI REPUBLIC” are arced facing upward.

The Gold African Elephant is scrambled for by investors and collectors because trading in these coins is at a considerable premium above the prices of gold. This premium price is attributed to the controversy surrounding the legal tender status of the coins. A Silver African Elephant coin is also available. Trading in this product from the Munich-based Bavarian State Mint (established in 1158) is exempt from sales tax or VAT when you buy Gold African Elephant coins online.
