Buy Silver African Elephant coins online. The Silver African Elephant coin originated as part of the African Wildlife series for the nation of Zambia. From 1999, it was offered as a 1 troy ounce coin. In 2004, the coin was offered for the nation of Somalia instead.  Though the coin has always been referred to as part of the African Wildlife Series, it is the only known coin to feature this official name of the coin itself. The Somalian Silver elephant is offered in unique designs each year.

The coin has a diameter of 39 millimeters and a thickness of 3 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a silver purity of 99.99%. On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz Somalia Silver Elephant, the image of the newest African elephant design, the fourteenth design used in the series. It features the elephant in the foreground amidst the grasses of the savanna. At the background, a traditional thatch-roof hut is in the background and on a small palm tree. A moon is also visible at the rear-top. The name “AFRICAN WILDLIFE” is debossed at top of the coin, from the top-left to the top-right. The engravements “• ELEPHANT • 1 OZ Ag 999 •” are inscribed from the bottom-right, counterclockwise to the bottom-right.

The national coat of arms of Somalia is depicted on the reverse side of the Silver African Elephant coin. It consists of a shield with a five-pointed star. Two leopards support the shield from both sides.  Each leopard steps a lance with one limb. Two leaves are at the bottom of the shield crossing each other.  “20 SOMALIA REPUBLIC 17” is debossed from the mid-left side clockwise to the mid-right section of the coin. The monetary denomination of the coin, “100 SHILLINGS”, is engraved at the bottom of the coin; from the bottom-left side, counterclockwise, to the bottom-right side of the coin.

The coin was manufactured by the Bavarian State Mint located in the city of Munich. It was established in the year 1158. Being a legal tender currency, the coin is tax free.
