The coin is also referred to as the Rwandan wildlife coin. The coin was released to pay tribute to the African fauna and is a popular African coin amongst investors.

The coin has a diameter of 40 millimeters and a thickness of 3 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a silver purity of .999 and an aggregate weight of 31.1 grams. The obverse of the coin displays the image of impalas crossing the African plains, at the lower-left side of the coin. The impalas move towards the left profile of the coin. The topographical outline of the African continent almost covers a half of the obverse. The outline runs from the top of the coin to the bottom. On the left side of the coin, along the rim, the text “AFRICAN OUNCE” is engraved from the bottom-left to the top-left. The year of mintage of the coin, “2014”, is debossed on the top-right of the coin, above the Horn of Africa. The size of the coin- “1 OZ”, the silver purity of the coin- “FINE SILVER 999”; are engraved, respectively, at the bottom-right side of the coin to the mid-right section of the coin, below the Horn of Africa.

The reverse of the Silver African Impala coin features the seal of Rwanda which is centrally placed. The seal is made up of a stem of sorghum, a tree branch of coffee, a traditional basket, which are on a cog wheel. The text “REPUBLIKA Y’U RWANDA” is written on a ribbon meaning Republic of Rwanda. Rwanda’s motto is written on a ribbon below the seal, “UBUMWE – UMURIMO – GUKUNDA IGIHUGU” which means Unity, Work, Patriotism.  The text “BANKI NKURU Y’U RWANDA” extends from the mid-left side to the mid-right side; meaning National Bank of Rwanda.  At the bottom of the coin the inscription, “AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU”, is debossed from the mid-left to the mid -right side of the coin.
