The 1 t/oz coin has a diameter of 40 millimeters and a thickness of 3 millimeters. It has a silver purity of 99.9% and has a reeded edge. The obverse of the coin depicts three meerkats at the bottom-left of the coin; two facing on the left profile of the coin, one facing forward. The African continent, with a rugged finish, outlines itself from the top of the coin to the bottom, arching over the three meerkats. It covers almost half of the obverse side of the coin. The inscription “AFRICAN OUNCE” is on the left side of the coin; from the bottom-left to the top-left of the coin, in a clockwise direction. The year of coinage is at the top-right of the coin- “2016”. The size of the coin- “1 OZ”, the silver purity- “FINE SILVER 999” are engraved at bottom of the coin, following each other in that order- “1 OZ FINE SILVER 999” from the bottom-left to the mid-right section.

The reverse of the Silver African Meerkat coin portrays the national seal of Rwanda. It consists of a stem of sorghum, a branch of a coffee tree and a traditional basket which are surmounted on a cog wheel. Two shields protect the inner components of the seal; one on the right, the other on the left. The motto of Rwanda is written on a ribbon below the shield; “UBUMWE – UMURIMO – GUKUNDA IGIHUGU”, which translate to Unity, Work, Patriotism. The text “BANKI NKURU Y’U RWANDA” is inscribed from the mid-left to the mid-right, translating to National Bank of Rwanda. “AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU” is engraved at the bottom of the coin; from the mid-left to the mid-right. The text translates to: Francs 50 Fifty.
