It is part of the African Wildlife series which was introduced in 2008 and is a highly popular collectors piece for investors of Silver African coins. The coins from the series are adorned with a different African animal each year.

The coin has a diameter of 40 millimeters and a thickness of 2.90 millimeters. It has an aggregate weight of 31.1 grams and a silver purity of 99.9%. The coin has a reeded edge. The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms for the nation of Rwanda. This seal was redesigned by the national government in 2001. The central tribal devices of the seal are; a stem of sorghum, a branch of a coffee tree and a traditional basket are surmounted on a cog wheel while the sun’s rays above while two typical Rwandan shields protect them, one on the right, the other on the left they. They are encircled by a square knot.

Along the bottom of the seal is the engraving “UBUMWE-UMURIMO-IGIHUGU” which translates from local Kinyarwanda to English as “UNITY, WORK, PATRIOTISM”. At the top of the Silver African Zebra coin, the text “BANKI NKUTRU Y’U RWANDA” is engraved which translates to National Bank of Rwanda. “AMAFARANGA 50 MIRONGO ITANU”, Franc 50 fifty, is debossed at the bottom of the coin.

On the reverse side of the Silver African Zebra coin, two zebras are portrayed. The outline of the African continent is on this side with a rugged finish, running from the top of the coin to the bottom of the coin. On the left side of the coin the inscription “AFRICAN OUNCE” is engraved. The year of the coinage,”2011”, is engraved on the top-right of the coin. “1 OZ FINE SILVER 999” is debossed on the right side of the coin, from the bottom-right to the mid-right side of the coin, below the Horn of Africa.
