The coin is part of the Lunar Series II, being the eighth animal in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. It was released to commemorate 2015 as the ‘Year of the Goat’. People born in the Year of the Goat as- 1919, 1931,1943,1955,1967,1979,1991,2003 and 2015- are considered to be elegant, charming, artistic, gifted and calm.

The standard size of the coin is the 1 t/oz coin. The coin has a diameter of 45.60 millimeters and a thickness of 2.60 millimeters. It has a silver purity of 99.9% and has a reeded edge. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of the coin. The Queen faces the right profile of the coin while crowned with the crown she wore for her coronation. Below the Queen’s neck are the initials of the designer, “IRB”, Ian Rank-Broadley. On the left side of the coin, the name “ELIZABETH II” is engraved from the mid-left side to the top. “AUSTRALIA” is on the right side of the coin; from the top-right to the mid-right. The size of the coin, the silver purity, year of coinage and the face value of the coin; “1 OZ 999 SILVER 2015 1 DOLLAR”, are inscribed from the mid-left side to the mid-right of the coin, respectively.

The reverse of the Silver Year of the Goat coin portrays three goats, which appear to be grazing in a field. Two of the goats are staring vigilantly ahead while the other is feeding on some grass. A tree with leaves is on the right side of the coin. The text “YEAR OF THE GOAT” is embossed at the bottom of the coin; from the left to right side. The Chinese character for goat, “羊”, is engraved above the goats. The mint mark, “P”, is at the bottom-left of the coin.

Coinage was done by the Perth Mint, which was established on 20th June 1899. There is also an Australian Gold Year of the Goat available from the same mint. The mint is wholly owned by the Western Australia government and produces other bullion coins.
