It is the ninth animal in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac. The birth dates of people ruled by Chinese Lunar goat include: 1920, 1932, 12944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016. They are regarded as intelligent, quick-witted, optimistic, ambitious and adventurous.  The coin comes in the following sizes; ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz and 1 kilo.

For the 1 oz coin, it has a diameter of 45.50 millimeters and a thickness of 2.60 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a silver purity of 99.9% and a gross weight of 31.135 grams. The obverse displays the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen wears the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara facing the right side of the coin. The name “ELIZABETH II” is debossed on the left side of the coin; from the mid-left to the top left. The inscription “AUSTRALIA” is on the right side of the coin, from the top-right to the mid-right section of the coin. At the bottom, the size of the coin, the silver purity, year of coinage and the monetary denomination of the coin are engraved; “1 OZ 999 SILVER 2016 1 DOLLAR”, from the mid-left section to the mid-right section, counterclockwise. Ian Rank-Broadley’s initials, “IRB”, are below the Queen’s neck. He was the designer of the obverse side.

The reverse of the Silver Year of the Monkey side depicts an adult monkey facing forward and a baby monkey sitting on a peach tree. The baby is holding a peach, a symbol of longevity and immortality. The Chinese character for monkey, “ 猴“, is above the monkeys. The text “YEAR OF THE MONKEY” is at the bottom of the coin; from the bottom-left to the bottom-right.  “P”, the mint mark, is on the mid-left of the coin, beside the adult monkey.

The Perth Mint produced the coin. The mint was established on 20th June 1899 and is wholly owned by the government of Western Australia.
