The dragon is the most popular and only mythical creature in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The dragon embodies strength, beauty and a noble nature. These traits are flawlessly portrayed in the Year of the Dragon. The coin produced was a 1 t/oz.

The Silver Year of the Dragon has a diameter of 45.60 millimeters and a thickness of 2.60 millimeters. With its reeded edge, the coin has a silver fineness of 99.9%. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. She faces the right side of the coin wearing the crown she wore for her coronation. The name “ELIZABETH II” is engraved on the left side of the coin; from the mid-left section to the top-left of the coin. “AUSTRALIA” is inscribed on the right side of the coin from the top-right to the mid-right section of the coin.  The size of the coin, the silver purity, the year of production and the monetary denomination of the coin are engraved, “1 OZ 999 SILVER 2012 1 DOLLAR”, from the bottom-left to the bottom-right, counterclockwise. Below the Queen’s neck, the initials of Ian Rank-Broadley, “IRB”, are debossed. He was the designer of the obverse side.

The reverse of the Silver Year of the Dragon coin features a traditional Chinese dragon, a long scaled, serpentine creature with four legs. The mythical beast snakes its way around the design field on the reverse side as it pursues a flaming pearl. The flaming pearl is often renowned as a symbol of infinite wisdom. The Chinese character for dragon, “龍”, is engraved at the top-right of the coin. The inscription, “YEAR OF THE DRAGON”, is engraved at the bottom of the coin, from the bottom-left to the bottom-right, counterclockwise.  The mint mark, “P”, is on the top-right of the coin, below the dragon’s tail.

The Perth Mint, founded on 20th June 1899, produced the first Silver Year of the Dragon. Being a legal tender currency, you can buy Australian Silver Year of the Dragon coins online exempt from sales tax or VAT. A Gold Year of The Dragon coin is also available from the Perth Mint.
