The magnificent silver coin celebrates the Year of the Horse, the seventh animal in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. It is a sovereign coin backed by the Australian government. The coin comes in three sizes- ½ oz, 2 oz and 5 oz.

For the 2 ounce coin, it has a diameter of 55.60 millimeters and a thickness of 3.6 millimeters. Having a reeded edge, the coin has a silver fineness of 99.9%. The obverse of the coin, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She faces the right profile of the coin wearing the crown she wore for her coronation in 1953. “ELIZABETH II” is engraved on the left side of the coin from the mid-left side to the top-left. The name “AUSTRALIA” is debossed on the right side of the coin from the top-right side to the mid-right section of the coin. The size of the coin, the silver purity, year of mintage and the monetary denomination of the coin are engraved at the bottom of the coin, “2 OZ 999 SILVER 2014 2 DOLLARS”, respectively from the mid-left side to the mid-right side of the coin, counterclockwise. Below the Queen’s neck are the initials “IRB” standing for the designer.

The reverse of the Lunar Silver Horse coin depicts a pair of horses standing beside a stream; one facing the right side of the coin, the other sips water from the stream. Trees are seen on the rear-left side of the coin. The text “YEAR OF THE HORSE” is inscribed at the bottom of the coin. The Chinese character for horse, “馬”, is engraved at the top of the coin. The mint mark of the coin, “P”, is carved on the mid-right side of the coin.

The Perth Mint which produces Australian silver bullion coins, produced the Silver Year of the Horse. It was founded on 20th June 1899 and is wholly owned by the government of Western Australia. Traders of the coin, collectors and investors are free from sales tax or VAT when they buy Australian Silver Year of the Horse coins online.
